Trichy or Tiruchirappalli as it is called is located on the banks of the Cauvery river and is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu. A wonderful mix of history and modernity, Trichy was once ruled by the Cholas and later by the Pallavas. Trichy was under the Mughals for some time and later the Vijaynagar rulers captured it. It remained under the Vijaynagar Empire till 1736 before Muslims took it. Later, the British took Triuchirappalli under their control till the independence.

Trichy has a number of tourist destinations. The prominent among them is the 83 metre high Rock Fort that is built on the oldest rock of the world that is believed to be 3,800 years old. The Uchhi Pillayar Koyil temple is the rock cut temple and can be approached by a flight of the steps. The fort has inscriptions that were written as far back as 3rd century BC. Just seven kilometres from Trichy is Srirangam Island, an important pilgrim center. The Srirangam Island is surround by Cauveri river on one side and its tributary Kollidam on the other. The island is enclosed by the wall of the Sriranganathawami Temple that dates back to 14th to 17th century. Many rulers from Cheras, Pandyas, Cholas and Hoysalas constructed the temple.

Thiruvanaikkaval is one of the most revered temples of Shiva in Trichy. The temple signifies the five elements of wind, water, fire, earth and space. The water element at the temple is represented by a natural spring in the sanctum. Samayapuram Mariamman just 20 kilometres north of Trichy is another important temple around Trichy. The temple is dedicated to Maariamman. A number of devotees throng the temple every day.

For a change one can also visit Viralimalai Sanctuary that is situated about 30 kilometres from Trichy. The sanctuary is famous for the Murugan temple and Peacock sanctuary, as the area has a number of peacocks. You can see them roaming around the Murugan temple. There other popular destinations in and around Trichy that include Sittanavasal, Government Museum and Kudumianmalai.
