Ranthambore National Park is situated in eastern Rajasthan. Earlier, it used to be a hunting preserve for the Maharajas of Jaipur but later in 1980, it was declared a National Park and came under the Project Tiger. It has six man-made lakes which make the landscape even more beautiful. Though compared to other National parks Ranthambore covers a small area of about 392 sq. kms, it can yet boast of many kinds of flora and fauna. The Park has Tiger, Leopard, Boar, Sambar, Gazelle, Chital, Indian hare among many others. Besides, there are enough birds to keep the bird watchers busy on a long vacation.
The appeal of Ranthambore National Park lies in the fact that, it not only gives the tourists a chance to enjoy the greenery and observe the wildlife but also a chance to see the 1000 year old fort, which was built during the Chauhan dynasty. One historical fact about this fort is that in the year 1301 AD, many Rajput women committed suicide in order to save themselves from humiliation. During the siege by Ala-ud-din Khilji, these women committed "Johar" and thus escaped from being arrested by his forces. There are also temples and tanks that add to the charm of the well-built fort. This fort has huge living areas or quarters, temples and barracks. In the midst of these is one of the biggest man-made lakes, called the Padam Talao, which is an added attraction for people holidaying in Rajasthan.
It is quite easy to see why so many Tour Operators or Tour Guides offer wildlife vacation packages to Ranthambore National park. It is regularly visited by photographers for here they can take pictures of Tigers in their natural habitat. The fort provides the perfect backdrop and so is a favorite subject of wildlife photographers.
Another factor that makes Ranthambore a perfect holiday spot for holidays and vacations is that, it is in Rajasthan which is already a major attraction for tourists from world over. It also has somewhat of a symbolic significance since most of Rajasthan is dry and arid, but Ranthambore National Park seems like a little oasis, thus making the greenery even more appealing in contrast.
