The forest around Bandhavgarh (game preserve) was once the shikargah of the Maharajas of Rewa, who used to shot the tigers. One of the Maharajas is believed to have shot about 109 tigers. His Highness Maharaja Venkat Raman Singh had shot 111 tigers by 1914. Bandhavgarh was converted into a national park in 1968. Though initially the area of the park was about 105 square kilometres but it was later extended in 1986.

Bandhavgarh is nestled in the Vindhya mountain range and is famous for Royal Bengal Tigers, cheetals, leopards, sambhar and gaur. The park is also home to a number of other wild animals. The park has more than 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds.
