Local Hindu rulers ruled Srinagar until the coming of the Mughals in the 14th century. In the early part of the 19th century Ranjit Singh ruled Srinagar. After his defeat from the British, Srinagar went to Gulab Singh, who ruled the Kashmir valley till 1947.

Srinagar is well connected with air, rail and road transport to the rest of India. Regular flights connect Srinagar with Jammu and Delhi. Jammu is also the nearest railhead to Srinagar, which is about 300 kilometres from Srinagar.

Srinagar is in the north-west of Jammu and Kashmir and surrounded by beautiful snow-covered peaks. River Jhelum passes through the Srinagar city. Srinagar surprises a traveller with its sheer beauty. There are a number of places that one can visit when on a tour of the city. Cheshma Shai or Royal Spring makes an important spot, which is about nine kilometres from Srinagar. It was built by Shah Jahan in 1632. Just two kilometres from Cheshma Shai is Pari Mahal, which was founded by Dara Shikoh, the son of Shah Jahan. These two spots have been developed into a tourist village.

When it comes to gardens in Srinagar, Nishat Garden occupies an important place. It was built by Nur Jahan's brother Asif Khan in 1633. Nishat Garden is situated on the banks of Dal Lake and offers a beautiful sight of the Dal Lake. Shalimar Garden is about 15 kilometres from the city and was built by Mughal emperor Jehangir for his wife Nur Jahan.

Shankaracharya Temple is another important landmark in Srinagar. The temple situated on the Shankaracharya hill is believed to be built by Raja Gopadatya in 371 BC. Srinagar has a number of other important religious places that include Hazratbal Shrine, Khangah-e-Molla, Jama Masjid, Khir Bhawani Temple and Chatti Padshahi.
